Ruel Rigging History 1995 - Present

Serving the Boating Community Since 1995

Ruel Rigging has been a trusted name in yacht rigging for over three decades. Founded in 1995 on Scotland Island in Sydney’s stunning Northern Beaches, the business began with a single workshop and a bold first project: the complete re-rigging of the 1902 tall ship Solway Lass—hand spliced and executed entirely in situ at Darling Harbour.

As demand quickly grew, the team relocated to Bayview Marina in 1997, where operations continue today. In 2006, Ruel Rigging began commissioning new Hanse yachts and has since completed the commissioning of over 300 rigs in new yachts.

Now operated by a skilled team of experienced riggers and sailors, Ruel Rigging carries forward a legacy of excellence and attention to detail that has earned the trust of both the racing and cruising communities across Australia.

From cruisers preparing to head north, to weekend sailors wanting a safe, well-maintained vessel for club racing or family outings, we support boat owners at every level with the same dedication to quality and service.

Whether you're racing offshore or preparing for coastal cruising, Ruel Rigging remains committed to delivering superior craftsmanship and personalised care.

Mario Ruel

Mario Ruel – Founder

With rigging experience dating back to 1982, Mario Ruel founded Ruel Rigging in 1995 after arriving in Australia from Canada. His early years included sailing with the Canadian Navy Sea Cadets and participating in international yacht races across the Caribbean aboard renowned vessels like the 110ft schooner Condor and the HMS Bounty during the 1987 First Fleet re-enactment.

Mario’s reputation for precision and quality has been recognised both on and off the water—including his selection as the key ship’s rigger for the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film. Though no longer at the helm of the business, Mario continues to sail and enjoy racing aboard the timber cutter Florrie and his Bavaria 44, moored in Pittwater.

Nick’s diverse experience, both locally and overseas, ensures each project is handled with precision and efficiency. As an accomplished sailor, he races Formula 16 and 18 catamarans competitively at the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club and has earned national-level titles.
